Chapter Thirteen

A few minutes later, we arrived at Plum Path.

That was where Richard’s sister, Briana Hendrickson, lived.

The thirty-five-year-old was renting a townhouse on the tree-lined street.

Just like before, as an added precaution, the detective had Deputy McLendon drive around back to watch the rear of the unit for any unusual activity.

Unlike out last interview, the property had a garage attached to the place.

Much to our chagrin, there it was a windowless garage, which made peering inside impossible.

For all we knew, the stolen vehicle was on the other side of that garage door…and Richard was inside the townhome.

Or we could be completely off base.

There was only one way to find out.

We approached the front door and rang the bell.

Typically, people didn’t come to the door right away.

Often, they would talk through the closed door to get a sense of who was on the other side before opening up.

This time, Briana Hendrickson swung the door open without even the slightest bit of delay.

Although, the moment she spotted Tyler and me standing on the doorstep, the look on her face immediately went from one of excitement to one of bewilderment.

“Wait a minute. You’re not the pizza guy,” Briana said.

Like everyone else in her family, Briana was thin. To the point where ordering pizza was probably a rare luxury for her rather than a weekly…or even monthly…occurrence.

The thirty-five-year-old was also tall. She had her long black haired pulled back into a ponytail, which made her blue eyes and oval face stand out even more. She wore a sweatshirt and yoga pants whose colors didn’t match.

“We certainly aren’t the pizza guy,” Tyler replied.

Briana squinted. “Who are you then? And what do you want?”

Tyler pulled out his police badge.

When he flashed it at Briana, her muscles tensed up.

“I think you have the wrong address,” Brian said.

The conversation had just started and I already felt a sense of dejavu.

In this case, that wasn’t a good thing.

One hard-headed member of the Hendrickson family was enough to deal with for one day.

I prayed that Briana would lighten up in a hurry.

“Briana, I can assure you, we’re definitely in the correct place,” Tyler said.

Briana’s nose scrunched. “How do you know my name?”

“Oh, we know way more about you than just your name. We also know that you have a brother—”

Briana interrupted the detective. “So, that’s what this is about. You’re trying to find Richard, aren’t you?”

“You’re aware that your brother escaped from prison then?” Tyler asked.

She threw out her arms. “Of course, I am.”

“How did you know that?”

The detective was incredibly curious to hear Briana’s answer. There was a chance that she’d just let some information slip out that she didn’t mean to.

Surprisingly, Briana scoffed. “Are you kidding? It’s all over the news.”

“True. Yet you’re mother had no idea Richard was on the loose.”

Briana looked upset to be included in the same breath as her mom. “My mother and I are very different people. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have a spreadsheet to get back to.”

That was a very curious comment.
